Merry Christmas from our Family!

Merry Christmas from the Carrington's and Wentzell's!

...and this is when the breakdown of the babies started 2 seconds later.

Mark and I are off to the cabin until tomorrow evening with no kiddos. We're looking forward to some quiet time and snowshoeing of course! The girls will be back here having a blast with PeeWee and Pop-Pop. See ya when we get back!

My craft is done!

...and not a moment too soon! Trust me, I planned on finishing this just a couple days after I first posted, but it got set to the side when we moved so I packed it up and brought it to Minnesota.

This is so anti-climactic, but - buckle up - I made an..... advent calendar! And yes, finished it in time for Christmas Eve. I took pics of my progress along the way, but left those on our camera in NC so I'll try to put those up when we get home. For now, you can see my last few steps. I want to add a couple more things, but overall it's functioning so we'll call it done. I enjoyed making it and am happy with how it turned out....maybe I'll have some more crafting in my future?

I went to Jo-Ann Fabrics and bought yellow fabric and then these vintage quilting squares to use as pockets. A homerun because I was planning on cutting the pockets out myself. It would've been rough. I don't own a sewing machine and haven't sewn since Home Ec in 7th grade so I used fabric glue which worked like a charm! Last night I added the numbers and the dowel rod to hang it. And, voila! Completed! (sort of).

I used fabric paint and stamps to put the numbers on. I didn't want them to stand out too much, but some of them are reallly hard to see at all so my new idea is to add some iron on numbers if I can find a cute font. But until then, each pocket has a number - you may just have to squint to see it.

See the 8 and 9?

Then, Dad helped (rather, he did it and I watched) saw the dowel rod to the proper length and drilled holes in it for me to thread the ribbon through.

And here it is! Each pocket will have a piece of paper with a scripture passage for that day and a piece of candy. Also, I need to stamp or iron on "Christmas" or "Advent" across the top. I figured, since this will be in our family for years to come, I can tweak it as we go and call it finished for now. :)
Merry Christmas!

Winter Wonderland

A winter snowstorm has started here and we might get up to 12 inches by tomorrow! (A lot of fun for a certain Southern boy who didn't grow up with White Christmases).

We're enjoying the cold weather here!

Emory at 6 months

Happy 6 months, Pretty Girl! Well, Miss Smiley is now 6 months old and still lovin' life. This grin in the picture is one we see often. While she certainly can cry, we get smiles out of her easily, which is a joy. I'll take Emory in for her 6 month check when we get back from Minnesota so I don't have any stats. But here's what she's up to at 6 months:

- Solids! We started solids about a month ago and she's enjoying everything we've tried so far. She eats squash, sweet potato, peas, green beans and rice cereal. Yummm. Once we get settled into DC I'll start making her baby food like I did with Brook. Blender and Ice Tray will become my good friends again. :)

- Almost sitting up. She's getting closer to sitting up on her own but isn't quite there. She'll make it about 10 seconds before toppling to the side.

- She can roll over both ways but has little interest in it, so most of her time is spent laying on her back or side and playing or sitting up in her exersaucer.

- Sleep is sort of consistent, but nothing set in stone yet (oh, I look forward to that day). She goes down around 8 or 8:30 and used to wake up between 6 and 7. These last couple weeks of moving and traveling have thrown her off quite a bit and we've seen lots of 5 am wake ups and, while we've been in Minnesota, she's even been waking up during the night a couple times. Oh friends, it is hard to go back to that after getting used to sleeping through the night. We let her cry it out last night and she went back to sleep on her own, so hopefully the end of night waking will come soon. She takes 3 naps a day and those still vary in length; 45 minutes to an hour and a half. So, all in all, she's a good sleeper just not very predictable yet.

- And, last but not least, she is still highly entertained by her older sister. I continue to think Brook is doing something that's going to send Emory to tears only to hear her bust out in giggles. It's adorable to watch! It's fun to see how much the girls love eachother and makes me excited for them to play together as Emory gets a little older.

We love you, Sweet Emory!

We're in Minnesota!

It's great to be back in Minnesota! We're here for 2 weeks and are looking forward to being able to stay a little longer than usual. The weather's been "mild" with highs in the 20s. Seriously, the local news talks about "what a beautiful day it's going to be tomorrow" and then goes on to predict a high of 23. But, it actually doesn't feel that bad here when you expect it to be cold. 25 would feel much colder in Raleigh. But enough about the weather.

It's been a whirlwind since we got here. Getting the girls through the airport was drama, but hilarious. Sleep-deprived Brooklynn bawled over every item we had to put on the conveyor belt in security (which was everything, of course), crying as if she'd never see them again.... "jacket!" "mama backpack!" "pink stroller!!!" I think Special Blankie was the straw that broke the camel's back. But, a few goldfish on the plane and Elmo's World seemed to erase those bad memories.

On Friday night I had a sleepover with my Fry Street girls for our annual Fry Street Christmas and had the best time. It's like we don't miss a beat. We thought it would be a good idea to pretend we were in college again and stayed up until 4 in the morning. Oh I was regretting that the next day. Our husbands and kids came over the next morning and we all had breakfast together. We NEVER invite the husbands to Fry Street things, so I think this should be a new tradition! It was so fun!

On Saturday, my niece and goddaughter, Julia, was baptised and then we had a light supper at our house afterwards. Julia looked so sweet in her gown. Don't you agree?

Today we celebrated Christmas with my mom's side of the family. They are getting more and more creative each year! We started off with brunch at noon, followed by broomball at 2:00 and then dinner at 4:30. (Click here if you don't know what broomball is - ahem, Southerners). Me, Kristen, and my cousin's wife stayed back from broomball with the kids but everyone else played and had a great time! We all pay an "entrance fee" and all of the money goes to a charity instead of buying gifts for eachother. I think it's a great new tradition now that all of the cousins are grown up.

So now we're back at the house, the girls are asleep and we're looking forward to a quiet few days to rest up after our busy couple of weeks we've had. Oh, and I left the camera at home that had Bahamas pics so I won't be able to post those until we get back. But don't be too disappointed....it's like honeymoon pics, they almost all look the same - just the two of us in front of the ocean or at a table at dinner. :)
Merry Christmas!

We're baaaaack!

Oh it's been a whirlwind couple of weeks. We moved out of our house last week, which was stressful and overwhelming to say the least, but then Mark and I went to the Bahamas! We went by ourselves and it was WONDERFUL. We had a great time. We just got back tonight and will be here in Raleigh tomorrow before leaving for Minnesota bright and early Friday morning. As soon as I get a chance I'll update the blog with pictures from our trip. Don't get too excited - when it's just two of you, you can only take so many pictures, right?

We missed our girls like crazy. It's great being back home with them!

Guest Blogger

Introducing Emory Charlotte Carrington. Her first blog post.

Hey all. Not much to report here. Just laying on my blanket kicking alot and playing with my frog and special blankie (love those tags). I occasionally play in my exersaucer. I love rice cereal. I love to smile and especially love to laugh at my big sister. She gives great hugs and kisses. And, since I can't type yet, I wore this shirt to give my mom credit for helping me with my first post.

Love,
Emory

I'm Crafting!

I'm doing my own homemade craft project!

If you've known me long enough you know I am NOT a crafter. I generally don't have the patience or creativity that homemade crafts require...but I wish I did! So I won't tell you what it is, but I promise to blog the process (you'll meet Cathy from Jo-Ann Fabrics) and end result when I'm finished. Here's a hint: it's EASY (for crafters; it will be involved for me) and is for our family for the Christmas season.

Angel, Natalie, Sarah and other crafting friends you will be so proud of me for doing my very own craft!

The girls at 5 months

I put Emory in this outfit for the first time and instantly had vivid memories of Brooklynn wearing it. I need to do more of these comparison photos since Emory wears most of Brook's hand-me-downs. Do you think they look alike? Mark and I don't really, although we occasionally see similarities. We had fun looking back through some of Brook's pics at 5 months. We wish we could have her back at that age for just a moment!
